When you visit the Oak Bank Hotel you have a definite advantage over certain other places in the Lakes.
Grasmere village, being the central location that it is, means that you have everything in the Lake District within easy reach.
Keswick is a leisurely twenty-minute drive away through spectacular countryside - Ambleside lies to the south and is an ideal pause in your journey down to Windermere, through similarly impressive scenery. Grasmere enjoys a certain tranquility compared to the busy towns surrounding it and the word "busy" in Grasmere does not mean the same kind of busy you might find in Keswick.
On venturing out of the hotel, a short walk finds you at the historically significant site of William Wordsworth's grave and you can also visit Dove Cottage, his former home.
We also have arguably the best known gingerbread shop in the country just a few minutes stroll from the hotel - click here if you would like to visit their web site.
The village also boasts several outdoors equipment shops, art galleries, a garden centre, coffee shops for those essential top-up breaks and the open-topped Lakeland Tour Bus stops by every 20 minutes...
A little further afield and you have Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle, Brougham and Muncaster castles (with its World Owl Centre and Himalayan Gardens), Furness Abbey, Lannercost Priory and Grizedale Forest.
You can also go boating, fishing, hiking, golfing, bird watching and, well, you get the idea...
